Joachim Hillmann

born on 28 May 1958 in Karlsruhe

“For some, my works are the merry and surprising interaction of fresh and charming colour compositions on canvas, for others they simply offer a wonderful possibility to relax while viewing them.”
Joachim Hillmann

PERSPECTIVE

Friction in Gesture and Form

Dynamics, movement and intensity of color – these are the characteristics of the large-format works of the artist Joachim Hillmann. In sweeping gestures and forms the textures stretch over the canvas, remaining abstract yet at the same time capturing the palpable.
Joachim Hillmann uses various materials for his compositions, but predominantly acrylic and varnish, rendered with a lush impasto but also glaze. The technique of pouring the colour and then letting it disperse by tilting the canvas makes it possible to scratch into the still wet elements, to push them and to shift textures.

From the gestural traces of the colour gradient, from the associations arising from the work, Joachim Hillmann develops naturalist motifs in a series of works. These objects, vegetable fragments or shining flowers, have no base in the graphical reality. In their dynamic movement and form, they are rather worked solely out of the colour by the artist. Their role model in nature has been reduced to the intensity of their expression of colour.

The free works clearly show the impulsivity of the creation process in the concentration on the theme of the colour and thus on

the contentual essence. In the contrast of the differing materiality of a flowing, smooth as well as haptic surface, a tension between the flat and the spatial arises, a conflict with the depth of the depiction. To the beholder this looks like a competition of the intensities and thus leads to their very own personal interpretation. The dialogue Joachim Hillmann has worked out of the colour tones on the canvas is thus continued in the room as well as in the eye of the beholder.

Whether they show the concrete or the abstract, the works of Joachim Hillmann speak through their power of gesture and colour.
